Tutorials: Wing Resources

leafypeachy:

Wings can be really awesome parts of a costume! They can be really challenging though, so here is a list of tutorials for those interested in making a set!

Fairy Wings:
- Firefly Path made a nice tutorial that is really simple!
- Here is a simple wig design by Mary Grisham.
- DIY Fairy wings!
- You can buy fairy wings from Fancy Fairy Wings!

Feathered Wings:
- Here’s a tutorial on small feathered wings.
- Kudrel-Cosplay made a tutorial on a realistic wing set that can be made in different sizes!
- AndSewingIsHalfTheBattle made a tutorial on a large pair of feathered wings.
- Here’s a tutorial on large, rounded wings.

Paper Wings:
- Here’s a tutorial on making light-weight paper wings by ElenaLeetah

Arm Wings:
- Sunnybrook1 made a 5-part tutorial on how she made realistic bird wings to fit over her arms.

Articulated Wings: (Wings that move)
- Here is a tutorial on how to make framework for articulated wings. There’s also a video that shows them in motion!
- Tusense cosplay made a few videos on how to make folding wings.
- Here’s a blog dedicated to his progress/method he used to make his angel wings. They fold and have no visible harness!
- Here’s another tutorial on folding wings by gerundish.

Wing Harnesses:
- Here is a harness tutorial by HCC Cosplay.

Where to Buy Feathers:
- You can buy bulk turkey feathers here.
- For other types of feathers, check out this website.
- For custom dyed feathers, check this place out.

If anyone has any other resources they’d like to share, feel free to submit it to me and I’ll add it here! Also don’t forget about my master list of tutorials for anything else!

To give credit where it’s due, I found quite a few of these resources through The Dangerous Ladies and Momentai-Rawr. :)

Hey guys. I was just sitting around thinking about this commission I’m doing and I realized that I could share this amazing paint I use..

I’ve been using one tube of Golden Acrylics Iridescent Bright Gold for the past… 4 years or so for all of my gold needs. It’s hands down the best gold acrylic I’ve ever used.

I have a small tube of silver somewhere as well, and it’s just as good.

Their whole line of Iridescent paints is amazing. A 2oz tube will cost something like $12, but it will last a very long time. The paint is very light so it does not go on streaky, but you do have to layer it a few times to get a nice solid colour (see the crowns/tiaras above). This stuff is really fast drying and I prefer to use it over spray paint, especially for smaller items.

It is a good idea to get a cheaper metallic acrylic to ‘prime’ the piece in before using the Golden paints; you can see the difference a bit where Condesce was not primed, and PB was primed with a darker gold. PB’s crown therefore looks a bit more realistic and has a deeper colour.

I buy my paint locally, but you can also get them on Amazon and other websites.

Homestuck cosplayers, I have discovered something wonderful. Move over, Snazaroo and Ben Nye—there’s a new grey in town, and I have fallen in love instantly.
It’s called Mehron CreamBlend Stick, in light grey. It’s cream-based, so if you’ve had a bad reaction to cream-based makeup you probably shouldn’t bother with this one, but if not, I think it might be Literally Perfect. (Granted, I haven’t gone full grey with it yet, but a friend of mine went full grey with it at Fanime, and it looked FANTASTIC, so I’m hopeful!)
First off, it comes in a twist-up stick—think Chapstick, but a lot bigger, obviously. That makes it super easy to apply. (That was my main issue with Ben Nye—it was a pain to apply, even with a nice makeup sponge!)
Secondly, it’s cream-based. This may be a deal-breaker for some people, since some people do have bad reactions to cream-based makeup, but for me, it’s a true blessing. Snazz has never worked on me, at least not very well—I have hyperhidrosis (a disorder that basically causes me to sweat like Equius, except pretty much ALL the time instead of just when I’m nervous or horny), so no matter how much I sealed it, the fact that it was water-based always came back to haunt me. So if you sweat a lot in general, or if you go to a con in hot weather, this might be a lifesaver.
Finally, the coverage is AMAZING. See that smear I applied to my arm? Yeah, that’s ONE LAYER. (It does seem to become slightly less opaque as it dries—which happens fairly quickly—so I think I’ll probably go with two layers to be on the safe side, but that’s still way better than any other grey I’ve tried.)
It IS a bit pricey if you buy it from the official site (thirteen bucks plus shipping), but luckily it can be found elsewhere for considerably cheaper—I got it for just over ten bucks with free shipping on eBay, and it’s only slightly more than that on Amazon (around 11 bucks, if you include shipping costs). So really it’s not that much more expensive, and frankly I think it’s completely worth those few extra dollars.
So that’s my shameless plug! Hope this helps!
